Last week, Peter Low shared Three Characteristics of a Successful Mentoring Relationship. This week, he focuses on the essential qualities of a great mentor.
Effective mentorship is not an accident, but rather a conscious and rhythmic commitment to a two-way developmental relationship. Some of these insights I will share with you now:
ESSENTIAL QUALITIES OF GREAT MENTORS
There are two key characteristics that you should look for in a potential mentor. Both are foundational in cultivating a meaningful and lasting mentoring relationship.
1. A PASSION FOR YOUR PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT
Your potential mentor must have a genuine passion for your personal development. It’s essential they have enough self-confidence to not be threatened by your success. Great mentors celebrate with you when you achieve your goals. A great mentor will not seek to control you, rather they will have a genuine desire to see you go further than they’ve gone themselves.
2. A PERSON YOU DESIRE TO EMULATE
Your potential mentor should be someone who has the character and qualities that you aspire to. Your potential mentor will be someone you admire and respect. You want to find a mentor who is successful both personally and professionally. Ultimately, you don’t have work and life, you just have life. Pursue a mentor with integrity – someone who doesn’t compartmentalise their personal and professional life.
Mentoring is an incredibly challenging and extremely worthwhile investment that will take you to places you have not even dreamed possible. Mentoring starts with you intentionally pursuing someone you admire and desire to be like. Do not settle in your pursuit of a great mentor.
Stay humble, open and teachable. Choose to be a part of the top one percent who create an actionable plan and follow through on it. Find a mentor and realise your full potential.
