These signs have been around for as long as I have been driving. Big road signs saying “Take a rest, every 2 hours”. After I got off my P’s (Provisional License) and was driving long enough to see a revive centre, I was always up for a drink and biscuits. There were a few times I pulled in just to get a free drink.

It’s funny how the years roll on, we become more experienced at driving, and we see the reviver stations as a distraction to our destination! We say to ourselves, “I just spent the last 20min overtaking all this traffic. There’s no way I’m pulling over now. I will be back to the end again!” – maybe that’s just us guys??? Be careful that your experience doesn’t stop you from learning. I was just reading Matthew 11:25-30 and it jumped off the page and smacked me in the face. In this passage at time Jesus said:

“I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children.” – Matthew 11:25

What could be so simple that the learned can’t see but it’s obvious to kids? Have you ever watched a kid play hard and then get tired? Do they just keep going because they don’t know how to stop? No, they stop and rest.

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” – Matthew 11:28

In a quest for competing with others and winning, could it be that we have grown old and forgotten who we are? Who ever got a prize for working so hard that they ran themselves into the ground and lost their job? Which family got the award for never stopping and enjoying the journey with their kids?

These are some big questions, and no doubt you live a busy life. You may not have an hour to process all these questions, so please stop for 5 minutes and ask yourself:

  • What are the priorities in my life? Is there something that I’m missing?
  • How can I do my best to prioritise and value everything that is in my life and do it well?
  • Most importantly, am I at peace with God? Is there more to this life?
